Little Golden Book - Animal Book

Cats cuddle. Cats purr. Nothing's as smooth as cats' fur.

Mice scuttle. Mice squeak. When the cat's about, Mice sneak.

Owls hoot and Owls blink. No one knows just what Owls think.

I'm always on the hunt for second-hand Little Golden Books, and I've collected some fabulous ones recently.  One of my favourites is this My Little Golden Animal Book, which is full of very cute animal illustrations - farm animals, domestic animals, flying animals and swimming animals are all here.

The book is dated 1963 and features little rhyming dities to accompany each animal, with the very sweet illustrations drawn by Moritz Kennel. 

The Big Brown Bear - book & record

The Big Brown Bear - a little golden book and record!   

Well, here we are.... one week into the new year and January is already racing by with lightning speed!  I managed to find time over the festive period to have a rummage in my local charity shop, and found this super-cute 'Read and Hear' Little Golden Book AND record! (a 45 RPM for those old enough (like me) to know what this means).

The story is written by Georges Duplaix and illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren (copyright 1944, 1947) and tells the story of a naughty bear who gets stung on the nose after stealing some honeycomb from a beehive, whilst he was supposed to be out catching fish for his dinner.

It's been a mighty long time since I've seen a 45 RPM record, and it reminded me of the little portable orange record player I had as a child. Sadly, I no longer own a record player so I can't actually play the record, but I still thought the book and record set was too good to resist!

Little golden books (part 2) - Scuffy the Tugboat

Following on from my little profile on 'Tootle' I wanted to share another favourite second-hand Little Golden Book story that i picked up recently - 'Scuffy The Tugboat'. It was so lovely to revisit the story of Scuffy and the adorable naive illustrations - which I can remember so clearly from my childhood!

Scuffy is the story about a toy tugboat in a toy shop, who wishes for "bigger things" than sailing in the owners bathtub. So the toystore owner (the man who wears a polkadot tie) and his son take Scuffy to a small brook in a pasture, and soon the current carries him away. At first Scuffy is happy on his adventure - but very soon the brook turns into a stream, which turns into a river heading out to sea.

Just as he is about to sailout into the ocean he is rescued by the man in the polkadot tie and is happy to be returned to the bathtub!

The books is written and illustrated by the same people who wrote and illustreated Tootle and was originally published in 1946

Little Golden Books - 'Tootle'

A few weeks ago ( on yet another second-hand shop jaunt) I picked up a pile of old 'Little Golden Books' and was very excited to see some of my favourites from when I was a child! It really was a trip down memory lane and it was lovely revisiting them after such a long time.

I thought I'd profile a few of the books starting with 'Tootle'. Tootle is a small locomotive train and his story about his education at Lower Trainswitch School - where small trains learn how to become big trains, and all the distractions with the meadow next to his train tracks.

It's a very cute story and full of lovely old-school illustrations by Tibor Gergely. The books original copyright date is 1945.
